Hidden in the story of a young, lame exile is a beautiful foreshadowing of the Gospel of Jesus. Mephibosheth was the last remaining ancestor of King Saul after Saul had fallen on his sword in battle. The new King, David, should have destroyed Saul’s legacy so that no later claim to his throne could have been made by Saul’s family. The King, however, went out of his way to show loving kindness to Mephibosheth. The Gospel is similarly a story of a King who shows undeserved mercy to us when we are dead in our sin and, effectively, enemies of God! Jesus has made a way for everyone to receive an invitation to sit at His table. The question is, will we receive it?
