A Deacon’s High Call
Euan MacRae teaches on the high call of deacons within the church. He looks at the example set by those in the book of Acts, and throughout church history. These people helped build the Church, serving the Body and the elders. Deacons are not called to live event-based lives but are characterised by a consistent lifestyle of devotion to Jesus and the church. While the Bible doesn’t list the functions of deacons, it does speak to the character qualifications. They minister in the household of faith by the example of their lives, with tame tongues, and act as “shock absorbers” in the church by promoting unity amongst the people. This high call is not a steppingstone to another office like eldership, and we must restore our view of this high call to the Biblical standard. Ultimately, deacons are gospel representatives.
Euan serves on Four12 (F12) leadership and is an elder in Living Hope, on the Isle of Man. He married Karen in 1999, and they have three children. After studying Civil Engineering and IT, Euan entered full-time ministry in 2010. He has a passion for worship, teaching, and raising young leaders.
